Principle: 

Road Classifications.

Policy Description: 

The functional classification of the road system should be enforced to protect the community’s investment in the transportation infrastructure. A functional classification system should define the type of transportation service provided by a specific roadway within that classification. Expressway and arterial roadways should be used for through movement. Collectors should convey traffic from neighborhoods to arterials and local streets for driveway access. Road spacing, continuity, access control and the spacing of traffic signals should be designed in accordance with the classification system.

Action Items:

Action 1:

Adopt an updated Transportation Master Plan that incorporates roadways, transit, and bike and pedestrian routes, as well as an updated Major Street Map.

Action 2:

Incorporate recommendations of the Transportation Master Plan in the development review process.

Action 3:

Enforce recommendations of the Access Management Plan, including standards based on road classification.
